Unsurprisingly, we’re huge fans of cars here at Mayday Vehicle Rentals - that’s why for two decades we’ve been in the business of renting them out! Our headquarters are based in Luton, and did you know that in Bedfordshire there are lots of places where car lovers can spend a great day out? We look at some of them in this article.
Bedford Autodrome, Thurleigh
If you love racing cars, then Bedford Autodrome is just the place for you. A 384 acre site with four racing circuits comprising over five miles of track, the Autodrome was designed by former F1 driver Jonathan Palmer and opened in 2010.
The Autodrome hosts ‘PalmerSport’, a full day driving event in which guests are promised an exhilarating and memorable day driving high performance sports cars and open-top racing cars on the Autodrome’s four circuits in an eight activity programme.
And if you’re looking for a unique Christmas gift for the petrolhead in your life, the Autodrome sells a variety of vouchers for its trackdays and driving experiences.
Twinwoods Adventure, Thurleigh
If you’d like to experience the thrill of Formula 1 racing without the danger, then you’ll want to head to the F1 racing simulator at Twinwoods Adventure near Thurleigh. The Racehouse has three state-of-the-art racing simulation pods, which are very similar to the ones used by Formula 1 teams during practice.
The race tracks are actually laser-scanned replicas of real tracks around the world, and the simulators move and use vibration plates to make the experience seem as realistic as possible. The pods are even networked together so you can race against you mates!
Off road driving, Wyboston Lakes
Wyboston Lakes is a resort set in 380 acres of rural countryside and offering a range of business and leisure facilities. Amongst the many activities on offer at Wyboston is 4x4 off road driving, where you can take control of a Land Rover Discovery and experience the thrill of driving round a course featuring impossible drops and huge ascents.
Experts will be on hand to offer one-to-one advice on gear selection and clutch control, and as the experiences are offered as solo drives, there’s no waiting around to drive and no swapping drivers mid-way through. You can however take a couple of pals along as backseat passengers – if they’re brave enough!
The Shuttleworth Collection, Biggleswade
If racing cars around is a little too hands-on for you, how about looking at historical cars at the Shuttleworth Collection at the Old Warden Aerodrome near Biggleswade?
This incredible aeronautical and automotive museum is considered one of the most prestigious in the world and whilst its focus is on restoring and displaying aircraft, the collection also contains a large number of vintage cars - the oldest of which is the 1898 Panhard et Levassor, a French car designed by René Panhard and Émile Levassor.
The Shuttleworth is located two miles due west of the A1 at Biggleswade and during winter is open seven days a week (closed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day), 10.00 – 16.00.
