Moving house on your own? Make sure you rent the right van

When you’re planning a house move, the thought of cutting costs by moving your own belongings rather than hiring a professional removals company can be an attractive one.

If you’re planning on moving home by yourself, in this article we explain the different vans that are available to rent.

Unless you happen to own a van, you’re going to have to rent one – and choosing the right size van will be critical to the success of your move. If you hire a van that’s too small, you’ll end up having to make multiple trips – meaning your move will take much longer and potentially be more expensive due to the extra fuel costs. Hiring a vehicle that’s too large on the other hand could also see you lose money, as you’ll pay more for a bigger vehicle even though you’re not utilising all of the van’s storage capacity.

SWB van

If you only have a small number of possessions then you may be able to fit all your belongings in a SWB (Short Wheel Base) van. For small moves, the SWB vans most commonly used are standard panel vans like the Ford Transit Custom or VW Transporter. The approximate loading capacity of a SWB van is between 6 and 8 cubic metres, which is suitable for very small moves and provides enough space to transport 30 – 40 assorted boxes of personal possessions.

LWB van

If you have a greater number of items to move, then you should consider a LWB (long wheel base) van. Often referred to as Transit Jumbos or extra-long Mercedes Sprinters, LWB vans have a loading capacity of 12 to 14 cubic metres – suitable for transporting the contents of a small flat, including a small amount of furniture and white goods.

3.5 tonne Luton van

If you’re moving the contents of a two bedroom flat or small house, then you’re likely to need a 3.5 tonne Luton van with tail lift. A 3.5 tonne Luton van has a capacity of just over 15 cubic metres and the vehicle is perfect for removals due to the box shape of the rear loading area, which means there are no awkward wheel arches to get in the way during loading.

The 3.5 tonne Luton can hold up to 40 boxes of personal belongings, as well as kitchen white goods, a dining table and chairs, a sofa, two double beds, wardrobes, and a chest of drawers.

7.5 tonne Luton van

For large removals such as when you’re transporting the contents of a three bedroom house or larger, you’ll probably need to hire a 7.5 tonne Luton van. This is the vehicle of choice for ‘man with a van’ removal companies and with a loading capacity of over 26 cubic metres, you can certainly fit a lot into one. Approximately 40 to 50 boxes of personal belongings in fact, as well as kitchen white goods, a dining table and chairs, several beds, two or three sofas, and several double and single wardrobes.
